Airmile Credit Cards
These days most major UK credit card providers offer a vast array of reward programs to try and entice potential new customers to apply for a card. Since the inception of reward packages, one of the most popular packages that applicants go for is airmile credit cards.
As you may have guessed, an airmile credit card reward program works in much the same way as an airline frequent flyer program, only instead of being given airmile credits every time you fly with the airline, you are given airmile credits every time you make a purchase for goods and services on the card.
As each airmile reward program differs slightly, you will need to consider the following issues if you are thinking of applying for any of the airmile credit cards on offer:
- how many airmiles will you get for every £ you spend
- how many £s do you need to spend before you are entitled to redeem the airmiles
- like many frequent flyer programs, do the airmiles you have accrued expire, i.e. if you do not redeem the airmiles within 2 years will you forfeit them
- are you restricted to any particular airline or airline group (such as ‘Star Alliance’)
- can you redeem the airmiles for an airline ticket in a straight swap, or are you required to make a percentage of the ticket purchase in cash
Notwithstanding this, if you travel frequently and are often using your credit card during your travels, then airmile credit cards can be a very rewarding reward program to be a member of. However, if the only travel you do is your once a year summer holiday, you may want to think of a different reward program (such as the rewards offered with cash back credit cards).
Finally, because of the costs incurred by credit card companies offering airmile reward programs, most UK card issuers offering this reward program to their members ask their members to pay an annual membership fee.
