How To Earn Nectar Points With Reward Credit Cards

The Nectar point scheme is a scheme that allows credit card users and other shoppers to earn points through purchases. The Nectar scheme has been running since September 2002. As with other reward points schemes, the Nectar points scheme allows shoppers to earn at the rate of 2 points for every pound spent. These points can then be spent on other purchases.

Where Can I Earn Nectar Points?

Three of the key players in the Nectar points scheme are Sainsbury's supermarket, the Debenhams chain and BP petrol stations. However, Nectar points can be earned on a wide variety of retail items. Other retailers that offer Nectar points include:

  • Adams Childrenswear
  • Ford
  • Winemark
  • EDF Energy
  • Hertz
  • Magnet
  • Brewer's Fayre
  • Beefeater
  • Ebookers
  • Talk Talk
  • Dollond and Aitchison
  • Thomson
  • AA

What Must I Do To Earn Nectar Points?

With such a wide range of retailers, consumers can earn Nectar points in a variety of ways. Nectar points can be earned on food shopping with Sainsburys as well as other supermarket products. Nectar points can also be earned on petrol, childrenswear, car servicing, wine, gas and electricity, car rentals, kitchens, eating out, holiday bookings, telephone calls and breakdown services.

Some of the retailers allow consumers to earn extra points provided they meet certain conditions. For example, shoppers at Debenhams can earn extra points if they shop with the Debenhams store card. This is also the case with Adams Childrenswear. Many of the retailers also offer deals for business people.

How Can I Earn Nectar Points With My Credit Card?

Nectar and American Express have a co-branded credit card. This lets card holders earn points when they open a credit card account. Card holders also earn Nectar points when they spend at retailers that offer Nectar points at the usual rate of 2 points for every pound. When used in conjunction with the Nectar loyalty card, this allows Nectar credit card holders to earn up to 4 points for every pound spent. In addition, card holders can earn a point for every pound when using the card elsewhere.

Earning Nectar points is the only incentive for using this credit card. Balance transfers and other non-retail transactions do not earn Nectar points for cardholders.

How Can I Spend My Nectar Points?

Nectar points can be spent with a number of retailers. There are three main types of retailers:

  • High street retailers allow Nectar card holders to spend their points on children's clothing, wine and the wide range of products available at Sainsburys and Argos.
  • Points can also be spent on travel and leisure on activities such as days out, eating out, train travel, flights, holidays, hotels and passes for health clubs.
  • Card holders can also spend points on entertainment (DVDs, music, digital video recorders, television and so on), toys, magazines, pampering and charitable donations.

Points can also be spent and earned at Nectar's own online store.
